Antiques: Chinese Antique Furniture
June 22, 2008 – 12:36 pmMaterials play a huge part when analyzing Chinese antique furniture. There are so many different kinds of wood used in making these pieces of furniture. Each different kind of wood is traditionally used during a different period of time in Chinese history. The history alone that is attached to each of these pieces of furniture makes them worth their weight in gold, so to speak.
For example, Chinese antique furniture made of Walnut or Hetao was used during the Qing Period and was used for furniture primarily from the Shanxi region. Whereas Jichimu comes from some of the island regions and is known for it bird-like designs when cut. The decorations and the carvings on most of the pieces bring the wood to life no matter which carveable wood is being used. The significance of the details cannot be overlooked and they are what make this genre unique.
Different Kinds of Chinese Antique Furniture Surface throughout History
The Chinese people slowly evolved from a sitting on the floor culture to a sitting in chairs culture. This evolution is clearly reflected in the furniture design. Also, certain kinds of furniture were used by members of a certain class or station in life.
It is truly amazing how much history this tradition carries. Not only do antiques have their own history and past lives, but they reflect the past lives of those who have used them and the time during which they were being used. Chinese furniture importers inevitably have a passion for the products they import. Asian furniture, Chinese or otherwise, is special and rare and has become very popular in homes in the United States.
