Some examples of hard wood are Hongmu, Huanghuali, Jichimu, Tielimu and Zitan. Some examples of soft wood are Huamu, Jumu and Nanmu. Hongmu is a dark brown wood that is also sometime known as black wood. Hongmu is very similar to Huanghli abnd Zitan. Jichimu was used before the middle of the Qing dynasty and is grainy. When cut a certain way, the wood creates patterns that resemble birds. Tielimu is known as the strongest wood and is the oldest Chinese wood used in making furniture. It does not usually contain patterns or carvings.

Some of the soft woods are Huamu, Jumu and Nanmu. Huamu is rare, fragile and very expensive. Jumu is a strong wood that comes from elm trees in the south of China. It is light is color and makes beautiful furniture. There are many different varieties of Nanmu. It is also light in color and was used during the Ming and Qing dynasty for cabinets and bookcases.

So many elements make a piece of Chinese furniture unique. Asian furniture importers focus on all of these elements when considering which pieces to import for sale. Chinese antique furniture can be such a nice complement to any room in your house and brings the history of not only the culture, but also the history of the craftmanship. Whether the piece you are considering is made of Hongmu or Huamu, the quality of craftsmanship and value is always present.
